12 Days of Christmas: Elf

Could you do a film like 2003’s Elf with anybody other than Will Ferrell?  35 years ago the role would’ve been tailor made for Steve Martin.  25 years ago, Robin Williams perhaps.  Now a bit too old to play a role like Buddy the Elf, the role goes to Ferrell, the master of childlike bewilderment for adults.  And I couldn’t be happier about it. Devil’s DVD Advocacy: The Other Guys

The Other Guys is the fourth collaboration between actor Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, who previously brought us solid comedy gold with Talladega Nights, Anchorman, and Stepbrothers. I went in with high hopes, and those hopes were mostly fulfilled. It is a consistently funny movie, though with several, and perhaps, to some viewers, crippling, flaws. Read the rest of this entry

Megamind

Superheroes and super-villains have become a staple in the film industry.  Nary a month goes by without some sort of superpowered exploit coming out.  Some are good and some are bad (X-Men Origins: Wolverine anyone?)  Some are fresh and some are rehashed. Some are adult themed and some are family friendly, like last week’s release, Megamind.  I say family friendly instead of “for kids” because there is no such thing as a “kid’s film” anymore.  Not to digress too far, but when was the last time you watched something with your kids that seemed like it was strictly for them? The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard (Lonely Devil)

After seeing the previews that featured a couple of actors from The Hangover,  I thought I would give The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard a try. While at times this movie seemed to try too hard to be funny, it still was good for a few chuckles.

Land of The Lost (Lil Devil Review)

I don’t know what I expected.   Land of The Lost wasn’t exactly The Sopranos of the sci-fi world.  Hell, it wasn’t even The Tortellis (if you get that reference, get checked out immediately).   The premise was cheesy and still is on the big screen.  The updated effects are just that.  They don’t enhance anything.  In fact, audiences of a certain age will see it simply as today’s standard.
