Director Spotlight: Alien 3

“You’ve been in my life so long, I don’t know anything else.”

This month’s Director’s Spotlight takes a look at David Fincher. We are starting this off with a movie that has been overlooked by a lot of people, myself included, Alien 3. I am going to be talking about some things from Alien 3 that are definitely spoilers for people who haven’t seen it. This movie tends to get a lot of flack for being the third in the franchise and for what it did to certain characters from the blockbuster hit sequel Aliens. You have been warned.

Devil’s DVD Advocacy: The Town

When I went to school the nuns only used small arms, no automatic weapons.

I’m just going to start with saying I will not be able to look at a nun now without envisioning a machine gun in hand.  An old stereotype is to say that catholic nun’s are strict and weld a ruler like no other.  Well…..this movie however has me thinking that is a thing of the past and now are more modernized for our time.

Director’s Spotlight: Amistad

This month we are skipping along through the long and vivid career of Steven Spielberg. This time we come along to 1997’s historical courtroom epic Amistad, starring Anthony Hopkins, Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman and Djimon Hounsou. By this time, Steven had become one of the most popular directors in Hollywood, thanks to the success of Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Jurassic Park, and his last big film Schindler’s List, winning the Best Picture Oscar four years prior. He had taken some time off to be with his family and start his studio DreamWorks, and was finally ready to get back into the game. However, he wasn’t sure he was the man for the job, being Jewish instead of African-American and having felt awkward on this issue while directing The Color Purple. To fix this, Spielberg helmed The Lost World: Jurassic Park first to ease his comfort, then Amistad was released later in the year. Read the rest of this entry
