Devil’s DVD Advocacy: Captain America: The First Avenger

Marvel Comics has been on quite a roll with their movies this year (Thor, X-Men: First Class) and Captain America: The First Avenger keeps that streak going. Directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jumanji) and starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America and the great Hugo Weaving as his arch-villain the Red Skull, Captain America is a great thrill ride of a movie. It’s a comic book movie with the patented silliness that comes with the genre, but the movie is done with such style that you just go along for the ride regardless of how silly everything is.

Episode 20: The Losers

This week Mike welcomes Joe Wilhelm back to the show where they discuss The Losers, another in a long cavalcade of comic book films coming this season.   In the episode they talk about Chris Evans, the A-Team, and what passes for “over the top” in a comic book film.

Give us a listen or we’ll disavow you and strip you of your military ranking.

The Losers

With keeping the notion that things happen in threes comes The Losers.  The first of three like movies coming out this movie season involving military type teams involved in far-fetched action appealing to the action junkies.  The others, A-Team and The Expendables, ironically were shown in the previews while I sat in theatre waiting to see this one. Offer made to Captain America (A Mad As Hell Op-Ed Piece)

In a quick follow up to Mike’s earlier post, the offer has been made to the actor who will be Cap in the Capt. America film and The Avengers. Who is it you ask?? Well my condolences to those who wanted Jim from The Office, sorry it’s just not to be. The other report about Ryan Phillipe….Ehhhhhhh sorry. No the title role is offered to none other than Johnny Storm himself, Chris Evans (says The Hollywood Reporter). Yayyyyyyyyyyy. No? Ok I’m not too sure either. I don’t hate the pick, lets just get that out there. Evans doesn’t scream Cap to me. He barely survived as a member of The Fantastic Four. A movie, FYI, that I hated…both of them.

I’m eager to hear what you all think. I’m a huge Cap fan and the last thing I want is another Wolverine to put me to sleep. Fan boys…and girls sound off!!!

Push DVD (Lil Devil Review)

Push gives us something seldom seen in a film about superpowered individuals. We get a fresh perspective, with individuals we have never seen before. The abilities are nothing new. The characters however are and we get to see them from start to finish (finish, if there are no sequels that is). And it is a good feeling, because now the anticipatory aspects (when will Wolverine pop his claws or will the Hulk yell out “HULK SMASH”) that come with watching an already “established” superhero film are gone.
