Attack The Block

A gang of inner city youths do battle with an invading alien in this South London-based sci-fi film, which kept me entertained from beginning to end.

It took me most of the first ten minutes to get used to the urban dialect of Moses and his “fam”, but after that initial period I was fully immersed in the inner city setting, which is full of the stereotypical posturing and intimidating youths any one who has seen the likes of Kidulthood and Adulthood will be familiar with.

Goonies 2.0

Acting from the young cast is competent for the most part, and Nick Frost, as a pot dealer, and Jodie Whittaker, as a woman mugged by Moses who ends up having to reluctantly team with his gang, are also well cast.

The creature effects are simple, which really suits the tone of the film, and help to give the ridiculously enjoyable mayhem a grounded and grimy style. The soundtrack by Basement Jaxx is perfect, full of pounding beats and intense moments.

Action packed and amazing fun, Attack The Block is a highly recommended one and a half hours of UK youth culture mixed with 80s creature feature style madness.
