Underworld: Rise of The Lycans DVD
Underworld: Rise of The Lycans is basically the origin story of the franchise, with a twist from the previous two. Instead of seeing the story through the vampire’s point of view, we see it through the werewolves.
Director Patrick Tatopoulos shows us how the blood thirsty feud between vampires and werewolves, better known to fans as Lycans, began. The story’s main focus is on Lucian, a baby born from werewolves, played superbly by Michael Sheen, and his relationship with the head vampire Viktor, played excellently by Bill Nighy.
Tatopoulos’s main theme here however is a “Romeo & Juilet” story between Lucian and Viktor’s daughter Sonja. Rhona Mitra plays Sonja and brings the beautiful, but deadly, persona to the movie like Kate Beckinsale did in the previous films. A good supporting cast, including Kevin Grevious & Steven Makintosh, helps move the movie along.
The special features included on the DVD give you a commentary with a few of the filmmakers, ranging from the director Tatopoulos to producer Len Wiseman, who directed the first two. I personally enjoyed the Origin of the Feud featurette which gives you the Cliff Notes take on the origin story utilizing the actors playing the characters that are featured. Other featurettes, such as the Underworld: Rise of the Lycans – From Script to Screen, was interesting as well, discussing how this film used more CGI and had more werewolf costumes than in the past films.
Overall an enjoyable film, especially if you are a fan of the first two. I give this film 3 out of 5 Pitchforks.
